Marseille is located on the south bank of the Lacydon. Erected in the 5th century AD on the site of a Paleo-Christian necropolis established in a former Hellenistic quarry, which later became one of the most important cemeteries of the ancient city, the basilica took the name of Saint Victor, a Christian martyr who is believed to have been buried in this necropolis. The current building is the result of successive constructions, primarily from the 11th to the 14th centuries.
