Fort Saint-Jean, which guards the entrance to the Old Port, was built during the reign of King Louis XIV. It was constructed more to monitor the city and any potential rebels than to defend the port entrance. On the south bank of the harbor entrance stands Fort Saint-Nicolas, built for the same purpose immediately before Fort Saint-Jean. Fort Saint-Jean, along with the J4 building, houses the MUCEM, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations.
