The Piazza del Campidoglio, or Capitoline Square. In the background is the Palazzo Senatorio, built on the foundations of the Tabularium erected by Sulla, which overlooked the Forum Vetus. The Capitoline Square as we know it was largely redesigned by Michelangelo in the first half of the 16th century. In the foreground is a copy of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the original of which (initially erected in the Forum), now in the Capitoline Museums, was installed in the same location under Michelangelo's direction in 1538.
