Piazza Navona was built on the remains of the Circus of Domitian, the second son of Emperor Flavian, who reigned after the sudden death of his elder brother Titus, who had inherited the throne. It follows the outline of this amphitheater remarkably closely. In its subsoil, one can see part of the remains of the northern end of the ancient amphitheater. In the foreground of this photograph is the Fountain of the Four Rivers, created by Bernini in the mid-17th century. In the background is the façade of the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. In the dead of night, it is deserted.
