The Ponte dei Sospiri, the Bridge of Sighs, built in the early 17th century, spans the Rio de la Canonica and connects the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and the historic prison. It was this bridge that condemned prisoners crossed to reach the prison's dark dungeons. Its name is said to derive from the sighs they uttered as they crossed it. Did you notice that this image was captured at the exact moment when the sun shines directly over the Rio de la Canonica, the moment when no shadows obscure any part of the Ponte dei Sospiri?
