The Rialto Bridge. Originally made of wood, it was, from the 14th century onwards, the only bridge connecting the two banks of the Grand Canal and therefore the two parts of the city. A stone bridge was built at the end of the 16th century. It remained the only bridge spanning the Grand Canal until the 19th century. Here it is seen from the Riva del Ferro. In the dead of night, it appears deserted, or almost!
